Spain to host the World News Media Congress in 2020.

2019-09-30

The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) invites the world's press to attend the 72nd World News Media Congress, the 27th World Editors Forum and the 4th Women in News Summit to be held in Zaragoza, Spain from 17 to 19 June 2020. The annual meeting of the world's press will be organised in partnership with Henneo, one of Spain's leading media and technology companies, which celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2020. The Congress will take place at the Congreso de Zaragoza.

The 2020 Congress will take place at a critical time for press freedom and the sustainability of media.

"We are thrilled to be able to stage the 2020 World News Media Congress and are confident delegates will find Zaragoza and Spain stunning and stimulating hosts," said Fernando de Yarza López-Madrazo, President of Wan-Ifra and President of Henneo, and Vice President of AMI, the Spanish Publishers Association. "We want Zaragoza 2020 to host the critical conversations needed to define future models for sustainable, quality journalism."

While enjoying the charm of one of Spain's finest cities, delegates will discuss and analyse the challenges and tensions that arise between content and technology; advertising and readership; cooperation and competitiveness.

"Our Congress in Zaragoza is a tribute to the vast diversity of our news ecosystem worldwide, and in particular to the many community news publishers who reach millions of readers every day. Our belief is that trust, democracy and civic engagement are built from the ground up. Local news plays a critical role in this process and high quality and financially sustainable local journalism are indispensable for people to have a shared understanding and connectivity on which communities depend to govern themselves effectively", said Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA.

The World News Media Congress is the annual meeting of news publishers, editors and owners from all over the world. It is hosted in a different city each year. The 2019 Congress in Glasgow drew around 900 people from over 60 countries for three days of conferences, executive meetings, networking, and social events. A list of previous host cities for WAN-IFRA Congresses, from 1948 to the present, can be found at http://www.wan-ifra.org/node/78299

Zaragoza is one of Spain's five largest cities and is the capital of the region of Aragón. It is situated the crossroads of the country's major journalism centres, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia. The pilgrimage city is a tapestry of 2,000-year-old Roman buildings, Muslim and Christian monuments from the Middle Ages, the impressive baroque Pilar Basilica with its epoch-defining art of local genius painter Francisco de Goya, and modern 21st-century architecture
